The Milky Way and its crooked corners
September 26th, 2008, 1:23 | posted by NS | category: News, OtherWalking outside. Fog covers the fields. The air feels humid and pleasant to breath. I look up to the Milky Way and the endless web of stars above me. They remind me of an early childhood memory, which I’m now going to share with you.
Rewinding back to when I was about six or seven years old. It was a dark evening in the middle of winter. I and a friend took our sled and went up a snowy hill, to slide down and then up again. Typical winter fun for kinds. One time we fell off the sled into a drift of soft snow. Lying there on my back in the snow, I gazed up to the night sky, wondering the countless number of stars blinking at me. Suddenly it occurred to me that there’s an endless amount of suns and planets (such as the one we occupy) floating in infinite space. It was probably the first time I actually realized the vastness of the Universe, our planet a mere speck of dust among it all. I was amazed by this new insight and ran straight home to share it with my parents. My mother’s reply was mind-boggling. “It’s better not to think too much about such things, or one might go crazy”, she said. I cannot tell how disappointed I was – I had figured out something I thought was of utmost importance, and was simply suggested to forget all about it. Talk about encouraging kids to use their brains…
I still cannot grasp what exactly was the point of what she said, but I’m sure its basis lies on the “ignorance is bliss” mentality that ultimately discourages experiencing the wonders and beauty of life, as some of it might be -gasp- dangerous! Nevertheless, I’ve been on the very path that might lead to insanity ever since. The one that challenges the traveler to use hir brain, senses and other tools that have been appointed to hir, the one that leads to shady areas where you might not always know what lurks behind the corner. Some of my thoughts and deeds might appear as those of a crazy person, but what exactly defines sanity? Well it doesn’t matter. We’re all here to go, somewhere, anywhere, the world is a road wide open and its only meaning is to be experienced! And it goes both ways: we observe, experience and participate in the Universe, and the Universe observes, experiences and participates in us. Therein lies the beauty of it all. We are the Universe. By our acts, thoughts and plain pure existence we enable the Universe to reach her full potential.
Ok, back to earth. I have some news also. The wild boys Massimo & Pierce wrote me, telling that The Milky Smell of Phantom Sperm has been released on Old Europa Cafe. It contains, among other stuff of great interest, Milk of the Stars which is a remix / reconstruction / re-interpretation of a Black Sun Productions track by yours truly. I’m looking forward to hear and see it all. It’s a limited edition of 500 copies and probably available via Some Place Else in the near future as well. Those interested might want to take their chance (unless you did already) and order the special subscription edition from Black Sun Productions, it has some nice extras included, apparently the offer is still available…
